Back in the Saddle Bit by Bit (B.I.T.S.) began in October, 2005 as an evolution of Whistlepig Special Equestrians, Inc. a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded by Jeanie and Tim Clifford of Broomfield, CO in 2003.  After experiencing success assisting individuals with physical and mental challenges learn and excel at horsemanship and horseback riding while improving their strength, motor skills, cognitive abilities and self esteem, it was determined that military personnel who had suffered injuries during service to our country would also greatly benefit from equine therapy and Back in the Saddle Bit by Bit was begun

Equine therapy techniques have achieved great success in cases of individuals suffering severe physical injuries and brain trauma.  These individuals have succeeded in reaching goals that others would take for granted, such as: sitting unaided, standing for extended periods of time, and the ability to move a body part at will.

The B.I.T.S. staff of instructors possess the experience and qualifications necessary to handle the broad spectrum of therapeutic and recreational riding offerings for both physical and emotional disabilities.  There is also a team of doctors available to address more complex cases.  They are also available to offer support to our staff and volunteers when necessary.  The B.I.T.S. goal is to aid in the total recovery process.

In addition to our equine therapy program, B.I.T.S. works to engage the entire community in welcoming and supporting our troops.  Numerous local veterans groups and various faith communities assist in our mission of expressing gratitude to our troops for their willingness to serve.  Local businesses have offered support in the form of meals and transportation.

The Department of Defense (DOD) acting through its Severely Injured Center has this to say about the B.I.T.S. program:
“The Department of Defense, through the Military Severely Injured Center, is working with private citizens to significantly improve the physical and mental health of military members seriously injured in the line of duty through the use of therapeutic horses.  For example, one organization, Military B.I.T.S. (Back in the Saddle), located in Colorado, uses specially trained equine therapists during the patients’ rehabilitation.  In the past, this same therapy used by other organizations improved the health of severely disabled patients. DOD is appreciative of the private citizens who have improved the lives of injured military members through physical therapy.”

In July, 2006, two of our participants performed in the five closing Color Guard ceremonies at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, CO
